ܗܪܛܘ ܒܬܪ ܚܘܒܐ ܘܛܢܘ ܒܡܘܗܒܬܐ ܕܪܘܚܐ ܝܬܝܪܐܝܬ ܕܝܢ ܕܬܬܢܒܘܢ
hrTw bthr khwb' wTnw bmwhbth' drwkh' ythyr'yth dyn dththnbwn
Follow after love, and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

ܡܢ ܕܡܡܠܠ ܓܝܪ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܒܢܝܢܫܐ ܡܡܠܠ ܐܠܐ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܠܐ ܓܝܪ ܐܢܫ ܫܡܥ ܡܕܡ ܕܡܡܠܠ ܐܠܐ ܒܪܘܚ ܐܪܙܐ ܡܡܠܠ
mn dmmll gyr blshn' l' hw' lbnynsh' mmll 'l' l'lh' l' gyr 'nsh shme mdm dmmll 'l' brwkh 'rz' mmll
For he who speaks in another language speaks not to men, but to God; for no one understands; but in the Spirit he speaks mysteries.

ܐܝܢܐ ܕܝܢ ܕܡܬܢܒܐ ܠܒܢܝܢܫܐ ܡܡܠܠ ܒܢܝܢܐ ܘܠܘܒܒܐ ܘܒܘܝܐܐ
'yn' dyn dmthnb' lbnynsh' mmll bnyn' wlwbb' wbwy''
But he who prophesies speaks to men for their edification, exhortation, and consolation.

ܕܡܡܠܠ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܢܦܫܗ ܗܘ ܒܢܐ ܘܕܡܬܢܒܐ ܥܕܬܐ ܒܢܐ
dmmll blshn' npshh hw bn' wdmthnb' edth' bn'
He who speaks in another language edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the assembly.

ܨܒܐ ܐܢܐ ܕܝܢ ܕܟܠܟܘܢ ܬܡܠܠܘܢ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܝܬܝܪܐܝܬ ܕܝܢ ܕܬܬܢܒܘܢ ܪܒ ܗܘ ܓܝܪ ܐܝܢܐ ܕܡܬܢܒܐ ܡܢ ܗܘ ܕܡܡܠܠ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܐܢ ܠܐ ܡܦܫܩ ܐܢ ܕܝܢ ܡܦܫܩ ܥܕܬܐ ܒܢܐ
tsb' 'n' dyn dklkwn thmllwn blshn' ythyr'yth dyn dththnbwn rb hw gyr 'yn' dmthnb' mn hw dmmll blshn' 'n l' mpshq 'n dyn mpshq edth' bn'
Now I desire to have you all speak with other languages, but rather that you would prophesy. For he is greater who prophesies than he who speaks with other languages, unless he interprets, that the assembly may be built up.

ܘܗܫܐ ܐܚܝ ܐܢ ܐܬܐ ܠܘܬܟܘܢ ܘܐܡܠܠ ܥܡܟܘܢ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܡܢܐ ܡܘܬܪ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܐܠܐ ܐܢ ܐܡܠܠ ܥܡܟܘܢ ܐܘ ܒܓܠܝܢܐ ܐܘ ܒܝܕܥܬܐ ܐܘ ܒܢܒܝܘܬܐ ܐܘ ܒܝܘܠܦܢܐ
whsh' 'khy 'n 'th' lwthkwn w'mll emkwn blshn' mn' mwthr 'n' lkwn 'l' 'n 'mll emkwn 'w bglyn' 'w bydeth' 'w bnbywth' 'w bywlpn'
But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with other languages, what would I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?

ܐܦ ܨܒܘܬܐ ܓܝܪ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܠܝܬ ܒܗܝܢ ܢܦܫܐ ܘܝܗܒܢ ܩܠܐ ܐܢ ܐܒܘܒܐ ܘܐܢ ܩܝܬܪܐ ܐܢ ܦܘܪܫܢܐ ܠܐ ܥܒܕܢ ܒܝܬ ܩܝܢܬܐ ܠܚܒܪܬܗ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܡܬܝܕܥ ܡܕܡ ܕܡܙܕܡܪ ܐܘ ܡܕܡ ܕܡܬܢܩܫ
'p tsbwth' gyr 'ylyn dlyth bhyn npsh' wyhbn ql' 'n 'bwb' w'n qythr' 'n pwrshn' l' ebdn byth qynth' lkhbrthh 'ykn' mthyde mdm dmzdmr 'w mdm dmthnqsh
Even things without life, giving a voice, whether pipe or harp, if they didn’t give a distinction in the sounds, how would it be known what is piped or harped?

ܘܐܢ ܩܪܢܐ ܬܩܪܐ ܩܠܐ ܕܠܐ ܦܪܝܫ ܡܢܘ ܢܬܛܝܒ ܠܩܪܒܐ

For if the trumpet gave an uncertain sound, who would prepare himself for war?

ܗܟܢܐ ܐܦ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܐܢ ܬܐܡܪܘܢ ܡܠܬܐ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܘܠܐ ܬܗܘܐ ܡܦܫܩܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܡܬܝܕܥ ܡܕܡ ܕܐܡܪܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܗܘܝܬܘܢ ܠܟܘܢ ܐܝܟ ܗܘ ܕܥܡ ܐܐܪ ܡܡܠܠܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ
hkn' 'p 'nthwn 'n th'mrwn mlth' blshn' wl' thhw' mpshq' 'ykn' mthyde mdm d'mryn 'nthwn hwythwn lkwn 'yk hw dem ''r mmllyn 'nthwn
So also you, unless you uttered by the tongue words easy to understand, how would it be known what is spoken? For you would be speaking into the air.

ܗܐ ܓܝܪ ܓܢܣܐ ܕܠܫܢܐ ܣܓܝܐܐ ܐܝܬ ܒܥܠܡܐ ܘܠܝܬ ܚܕ ܡܢܗܘܢ ܕܠܐ ܩܠܐ
h' gyr gns' dlshn' sgy'' 'yth belm' wlyth khd mnhwn dl' ql'
There are, it may be, so many kinds of sounds in the world, and none of them is without meaning.

ܘܐܢ ܠܐ ܝܕܥ ܐܢܐ ܚܝܠܗ ܕܩܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܐܢܐ ܠܝ ܒܪܒܪܝܐ ܠܗܘ ܕܡܡܠܠ ܘܐܦ ܗܘ ܕܡܡܠܠ ܗܘܐ ܠܗ ܠܝ ܒܪܒܪܝܐ
w'n l' yde 'n' khylh dql' hw' 'n' ly brbry' lhw dmmll w'p hw dmmll hw' lh ly brbry'
If then I don’t know the meaning of the sound, I would be to him who speaks a foreigner, and he who speaks would be a foreigner to me.

ܗܟܢܐ ܐܦ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܡܛܠ ܕܛܢܢܐ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܕܡܘܗܒܬܐ ܕܪܘܚܐ ܠܒܢܝܢܐ ܕܥܕܬܐ ܒܥܘ ܕܬܬܝܬܪܘܢ
hkn' 'p 'nthwn mTl dTnn' 'nthwn dmwhbth' drwkh' lbnyn' dedth' bew dththythrwn
So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek that you may abound to the building up of the assembly.

ܘܗܘ ܕܡܡܠܠ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܢܨܠܐ ܕܢܦܫܩ
whw dmmll blshn' ntsl' dnpshq
Therefore let him who speaks in another language pray that he may interpret.

ܐܢ ܗܘ ܓܝܪ ܕܗܘܝܬ ܡܨܠܐ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܪܘܚܝ ܗܘ ܡܨܠܝܐ ܡܕܥܝ ܕܝܢ ܕܠܐ ܦܐܪܝܢ ܗܘ
'n hw gyr dhwyth mtsl' blshn' rwkhy hw mtsly' mdey dyn dl' p'ryn hw
For if I pray in another language, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

ܡܢܐ ܗܟܝܠ ܐܥܒܕ ܐܨܠܐ ܒܪܘܚܝ ܘܐܨܠܐ ܐܦ ܒܡܕܥܝ ܘܐܙܡܪ ܒܪܘܚܝ ܘܐܙܡܪ ܐܦ ܒܡܕܥܝ
mn' hkyl 'ebd 'tsl' brwkhy w'tsl' 'p bmdey w'zmr brwkhy w'zmr 'p bmdey
What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

ܘܐܢ ܠܐ ܐܢ ܡܒܪܟ ܐܢܬ ܒܪܘܚ ܗܘ ܕܡܡܠܐ ܕܘܟܬܗ ܕܗܕܝܘܛܐ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܢܐܡܪ ܐܡܝܢ ܥܠ ܬܘܕܝܬܟ ܕܝܠܟ ܡܛܠ ܕܡܢܐ ܐܡܪ ܐܢܬ ܠܐ ܝܕܥ
w'n l' 'n mbrk 'nth brwkh hw dmml' dwkthh dhdywT' 'ykn' n'mr 'myn el thwdythk dylk mTl dmn' 'mr 'nth l' yde
Otherwise if you bless with the spirit, how will he who fills the place of the unlearned say the “Amen” at your giving of thanks, seeing he doesn’t know what you say?

ܐܢܬ ܓܝܪ ܫܦܝܪ ܡܒܪܟ ܐܢܬ ܐܠܐ ܚܒܪܟ ܠܐ ܡܬܒܢܐ
'nth gyr shpyr mbrk 'nth 'l' khbrk l' mthbn'
For you most certainly give thanks well, but the other person is not built up.

ܡܘܕܐ ܐܢܐ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܕܝܬܝܪ ܡܢ ܟܠܟܘܢ ܡܡܠܠ ܐܢܐ ܒܠܫܢܐ
mwd' 'n' l'lh' dythyr mn klkwn mmll 'n' blshn'
I thank my God, I speak with other languages more than you all.

ܐܠܐ ܒܥܕܬܐ ܨܒܐ ܐܢܐ ܕܚܡܫ ܡܠܝܢ ܒܡܕܥܝ ܐܡܠܠ ܕܐܦ ܐܚܪܢܐ ܐܠܦ ܝܬܝܪ ܡܢ ܪܒܘ ܡܠܝܢ ܒܠܫܢܐ
'l' bedth' tsb' 'n' dkhmsh mlyn bmdey 'mll d'p 'khrn' 'lp ythyr mn rbw mlyn blshn'
However in the assembly I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I might instruct others also, than ten thousand words in another language.

ܐܚܝ ܠܐ ܗܘܝܬܘܢ ܛܠܝܢ ܒܪܥܝܢܝܟܘܢ ܐܠܐ ܠܒܝܫܬܐ ܗܘܘ ܝܠܘܕܐ ܘܒܪܥܝܢܝܟܘܢ ܗܘܘ ܓܡܝܪܝܢ
'khy l' hwythwn Tlyn breynykwn 'l' lbyshth' hww ylwd' wbreynykwn hww gmyryn
Brothers, don’t be children in thoughts, yet in malice be babies, but in thoughts be mature.

ܒܢܡܘܣܐ ܟܬܝܒ ܕܒܡܡܠܠܐ ܢܘܟܪܝܐ ܘܒܠܫܢܐ ܐܚܪܢܐ ܐܡܠܠ ܥܡܗ ܥܡ ܥܡܐ ܗܢܐ ܐܦܠܐ ܗܟܢܐ ܢܫܡܥܘܢܢܝ ܐܡܪ ܡܪܝܐ
bnmws' kthyb dbmmll' nwkry' wblshn' 'khrn' 'mll emh em em' hn' 'pl' hkn' nshmewnny 'mr mry'
In the law it is written, “By men of strange languages and by the lips of strangers I will speak to this people. Not even thus will they hear me, says the Lord.”

ܡܕܝܢ ܠܫܢܐ ܠܐܬܐ ܗܘ ܣܝܡܝܢ ܠܐ ܠܡܗܝܡܢܐ ܐܠܐ ܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܠܐ ܡܗܝܡܢܝܢ ܢܒܝܘܬܐ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܠܐ ܡܗܝܡܢܝܢ ܐܠܐ ܠܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܡܗܝܡܢܝܢ
mdyn lshn' l'th' hw symyn l' lmhymn' 'l' l'ylyn dl' mhymnyn nbywth' dyn l' hw' l'ylyn dl' mhymnyn 'l' l'ylyn dmhymnyn
Therefore other languages are for a sign, not to those who believe, but to the unbelieving; but prophesying is for a sign, not to the unbelieving, but to those who believe.

ܐܢ ܗܘ ܗܟܝܠ ܕܬܬܟܢܫ ܟܠܗ ܥܕܬܐ ܘܟܠܗܘܢ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܢܡܠܠܘܢ ܘܢܥܠܘܢ ܗܕܝܘܛܐ ܐܘ ܐܝܠܝܢ ܕܠܐ ܡܗܝܡܢܝܢ ܠܐ ܐܡܪܝܢ ܕܗܠܝܢ ܫܢܘ ܠܗܘܢ
'n hw hkyl dththknsh klh edth' wklhwn blshn' nmllwn wnelwn hdywT' 'w 'ylyn dl' mhymnyn l' 'mryn dhlyn shnw lhwn
If therefore the whole assembly is assembled together and all speak with other languages, and unlearned or unbelieving people come in, won’t they say that you are crazy?

ܘܐܢ ܟܠܟܘܢ ܬܗܘܘܢ ܡܬܢܒܝܢ ܘܢܥܘܠ ܠܘܬܟܘܢ ܗܕܝܘܛܐ ܐܘ ܡܢ ܕܠܐ ܡܗܝܡܢ ܡܬܒܨܐ ܡܢ ܟܠܟܘܢ ܘܡܬܟܘܢ ܡܢ ܟܠܟܘܢ
w'n klkwn thhwwn mthnbyn wnewl lwthkwn hdywT' 'w mn dl' mhymn mthbts' mn klkwn wmthkwn mn klkwn
But if all prophesy, and someone unbelieving or unlearned comes in, he is reproved by all, and he is judged by all.

ܘܟܣܝܬܐ ܕܠܒܗ ܡܬܓܠܝܢ ܘܗܝܕܝܢ ܢܦܠ ܥܠ ܐܦܘܗܝ ܘܢܣܓܘܕ ܠܐܠܗܐ ܘܢܐܡܪ ܫܪܝܪܐܝܬ ܐܠܗܐ ܐܝܬ ܒܟܘܢ
wksyth' dlbh mthglyn whydyn npl el 'pwhy wnsgwd l'lh' wn'mr shryr'yth 'lh' 'yth bkwn
And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed. So he will fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is among you indeed.

ܐܡܪ ܐܢܐ ܗܟܝܠ ܐܚܝ ܕܐܡܬܝ ܕܡܬܟܢܫܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܠܐܝܢܐ ܡܢܟܘܢ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܡܙܡܘܪܐ ܢܐܡܪ ܘܐܝܢܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܝܘܠܦܢܐ ܘܐܝܢܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܓܠܝܢܐ ܘܐܝܢܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܠܫܢܐ ܘܐܝܢܐ ܕܐܝܬ ܠܗ ܦܘܫܩܐ ܟܠܗܝܢ ܠܒܢܝܢܐ ܢܗܘܝܢ
'mr 'n' hkyl 'khy d'mthy dmthknshyn 'nthwn l'yn' mnkwn d'yth lh mzmwr' n'mr w'yn' d'yth lh ywlpn' w'yn' d'yth lh glyn' w'yn' d'yth lh lshn' w'yn' d'yth lh pwshq' klhyn lbnyn' nhwyn
What is it then, brothers? When you come together, each one of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has another language, has an interpretation. Let all things be done to build each other up.

ܘܐܢ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܐܢܫ ܢܡܠܠ ܬܪܝܢ ܢܡܠܠܘܢ ܘܟܕ ܣܓܝ ܬܠܬܐ ܘܚܕ ܚܕ ܢܡܠܠܘܢ ܘܚܕ ܢܦܫܩ
w'n blshn' 'nsh nmll thryn nmllwn wkd sgy thlth' wkhd khd nmllwn wkhd npshq
If any man speaks in another language, let it be two, or at the most three, and in turn; and let one interpret.

ܘܐܢ ܠܝܬ ܕܡܦܫܩ ܢܫܬܘܩ ܠܗ ܒܥܕܬܐ ܗܘ ܕܡܡܠܠ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܘܒܝܢܘܗܝ ܠܢܦܫܗ ܘܠܐܠܗܐ ܢܡܠܠ
w'n lyth dmpshq nshthwq lh bedth' hw dmmll blshn' wbynwhy lnpshh wl'lh' nmll
But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the assembly, and let him speak to himself, and to God.

ܢܒܝܐ ܕܝܢ ܬܪܝܢ ܐܘ ܬܠܬܐ ܢܡܠܠܘܢ ܘܫܪܟܐ ܢܦܪܫܘܢ

Let the prophets speak, two or three, and let the others discern.

ܘܐܢ ܠܐܚܪܢܐ ܢܬܓܠܐ ܟܕ ܝܬܒ ܩܕܡܝܐ ܢܫܬܘܩ ܠܗ
w'n l'khrn' nthgl' kd ythb qdmy' nshthwq lh
But if a revelation is made to another sitting by, let the first keep silent.

ܡܫܟܚܝܢ ܐܢܬܘܢ ܓܝܪ ܟܠܟܘܢ ܕܚܕ ܚܕ ܬܬܢܒܘܢ ܕܟܠܢܫ ܢܐܠܦ ܘܟܠܢܫ ܢܬܒܝܐ
mshkkhyn 'nthwn gyr klkwn dkhd khd ththnbwn dklnsh n'lp wklnsh nthby'
For you all can prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be exhorted.

ܪܘܚܐ ܓܝܪ ܕܢܒܝܐ ܠܢܒܝܐ ܡܫܬܥܒܕܐ
rwkh' gyr dnby' lnby' mshthebd'
The spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets,
33
ܡܛܠ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܠܐ ܗܘܐ ܕܫܓܘܫܝܐ ܐܠܐ ܕܫܠܡܐ ܐܝܟ ܕܒܟܠܗܝܢ ܥܕܬܐ ܕܩܕܝܫܐ
mTl d'lh' l' hw' dshgwshy' 'l' dshlm' 'yk dbklhyn edth' dqdysh'
for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace, as in all the assemblies of the saints.

ܢܫܝܟܘܢ ܒܥܕܬܐ ܢܗܘܝܢ ܫܬܝܩܢ ܠܐ ܓܝܪ ܡܦܣ ܠܗܝܢ ܕܢܡܠܠܢ ܐܠܐ ܕܢܫܬܥܒܕܢ ܐܝܟܢܐ ܕܐܦ ܢܡܘܣܐ ܐܡܪ
nshykwn bedth' nhwyn shthyqn l' gyr mps lhyn dnmlln 'l' dnshthebdn 'ykn' d'p nmws' 'mr
Let the wives be quiet in the assemblies, for it has not been permitted for them to be talking except in submission, as the law also says,

ܘܐܢ ܡܕܡ ܨܒܝܢ ܕܢܐܠܦܢ ܒܒܬܝܗܝܢ ܢܫܐܠܢ ܠܒܥܠܝܗܝܢ ܒܗܬܬܐ ܗܝ ܓܝܪ ܕܢܫܐ ܒܥܕܬܐ ܢܡܠܠܢ
w'n mdm tsbyn dn'lpn bbthyhyn nsh'ln lbelyhyn bhthth' hy gyr dnsh' bedth' nmlln
if they desire to learn anything. “Let them ask their own husbands at home, for it is shameful for a wife to be talking in the assembly.”

ܐܘ ܕܠܡܐ ܡܢܟܘܢ ܗܘ ܢܦܩܬ ܡܠܬܗ ܕܐܠܗܐ ܐܘ ܠܘܬܟܘܢ ܗܘ ܒܠܚܘܕ ܡܛܬ
'w dlm' mnkwn hw npqth mlthh d'lh' 'w lwthkwn hw blkhwd mTth
What!? Was it from you that the word of God went out? Or did it come to you alone?

ܐܢ ܐܢܫ ܕܝܢ ܡܢܟܘܢ ܣܒܪ ܕܢܒܝܐ ܗܘ ܐܘ ܕܪܘܚܐ ܗܘ ܢܕܥ ܗܠܝܢ ܕܟܬܒ ܐܢܐ ܠܟܘܢ ܕܦܘܩܕܢܐ ܐܢܘܢ ܕܡܪܢ
'n 'nsh dyn mnkwn sbr dnby' hw 'w drwkh' hw nde hlyn dkthb 'n' lkwn dpwqdn' 'nwn dmrn
If any man thinks himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him recognize the things which I write to you, that they are the commandment of the Lord.

ܐܢ ܐܢܫ ܕܝܢ ܠܐ ܝܕܥ ܠܐ ܢܕܥ
'n 'nsh dyn l' yde l' nde
But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.
39
ܛܢܘ ܗܟܝܠ ܐܚܝ ܠܡܬܢܒܝܘ ܘܠܡܡܠܠܘ ܒܠܫܢܐ ܠܐ ܬܟܠܘܢ
Tnw hkyl 'khy lmthnbyw wlmmllw blshn' l' thklwn
Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and don’t forbid speaking with other languages.

ܟܠܡܕܡ ܕܝܢ ܒܐܣܟܡܐ ܘܒܛܟܣܐ ܢܗܘܐ
klmdm dyn b'skm' wbTks' nhw'
Let all things be done decently and in order.
